In all my four years of art, I have learned so much about all the different types of art, techniques, terminology, etc. Making many different things with many different meanings, I have not only learned how to express the physical aspects of myself and others, but also my passions, and emotions. Having a crafts I class my freshman year, then going to art affects my sophomore year I surprised myself with many things. The first surprise was finding out that I can actually draw realistic things without getting frustrated with myself in the first five minutes, or leaving a beautiful face without lips or a nose because I could not get it right to save my life! My freshman year the one thing I really enjoyed doing was working with clay, and all the different techniques, stages, textures etc. It also reminded me of my dad’s work because it was sculpting, and working with your hands for the most part.
As a sophomore I absolutely LOVED art affects class, not only was it a great way to express myself, but it seemed as if I could just let my mind be free. Most pieces of art work tell a story, and I know that everything I made in that class has a meaningful story behind it, whether you know it or not. With all the different materials we were allowed to use I could just pile things on that meant something to me.
As a junior I was disappointed to see that the only art class offered was Creative Arts. This is a class that pretty much covered what I did as a freshman and sophomore. I was hoping to go into art II, or a class that would have at least been new to me. Not only that, but as I wentt into my senior and even junior year I would have enjoyed having more than one art class in my schedule. I don’t think people understand that art class is not just a class, but it is also no different than any other class. Art theory, techniques, and terminology can pretty much cross over into all of the other academic subjects. Art forms can be traced back to the ice age between 35,000 and 10,000 BC. Since that time it has been used to depict and express ideas and events which have shaped our modern day society, how we live and think. Also, students retain verbal information much better in conjunction with hands on activities.
Although this happened, it did not stop me from trying even harder like I would have been doing if we did have that “next level” art class, nor did it stop me from having tons of fun. Art education has benefited and provided me with tons of knowledge, experience, confidence, and a strong motivation to continue what I love doing. After high school I will not only be taking art classes throughout college, but I will also be helping out my dad (http://www.davidgraeber.com/) with whatever help he needs, and will start making more of my own
